Specific Actions Taken

To ensure an effective new approach to short term planning, YCP Unison worked closely with the client’s teams on the following:

Clearly defined success and impact

Developed a new Short Term Mine Plan Model and Opportunity matrix that was designed to meet specific KPIs that aligned with the client’s larger goals.

Ensured alignment across departments

Implemented systems to promote buy-in and discipline to work according to technical standards. These systems were aligned across different processes and departments, from drill and blast to mine to mill processes.

Developed performance monitoring systems to sustain change

Systems to monitor and regularly incentivize new ways of working were implemented such as weekly Gemba Walks, 24-hour plan meetings, and weekly graphs, KPIs and action log tools.

Our Approach

YCP Unison worked with the management planning team in redesigning their Mine Planning Model. Together, specific daily and weekly tools were selected along with targets to lead the Mine Plan department in designing and developing efficient mine plans that accounted for the short term to ensure teams were on track for larger goals.

The goals of the project were to understand and have greater control over mining operations, allocate and deploy manpower and resources available more efficiently, and improve how mine compliance was measured as well as its immediate impact on ore production.

Results

The client gained clarity over their short-term goals and had systems in place to reinforce those targets over time for continuous improvement.

Greater mine plan compliance was achieved through a focus on short-term 24-hour intervals that cascaded into larger Higher Level Objectives being met.
